2005 Environmental Health and Safety
Committee's October Minutes:
Environmental Health and Safety Committee
October 11, 2005 Meeting Notes
Present: Gary Hanebrink, Mark Shaklee, Heidi Hawkins, Martha Brown, Joe Barron, Sandy Baumgartner, Dan Carpenter, Jeff Cooley, Julie Griffin, Rob Bates, Mike Carter, Jr., Phil Lang, Jeff Cross, Karen Nantz and Chuck Phillips.
Redraft of the Committee's Guidelines
Jeff Cooley attended the meeting and thanked the group for all the work they did reviewing and revising the Committee's by-laws (now operating guidelines). Jeff explained the revisions he made to the guidelines and asked the group for comments. The first sentence in the third paragraph of Item II (Purpose) of the guidelines shall be revised to read: “The Environmental Health and Safety Committee exists to promote a safe and healthy campus environment by advising and assisting the University Safety Officer in identifying (instead of reducing) healthy and safety risks to the campus community in a manner consistent with responsible environmental and fiscal stewardship.” There was some discussion relative to constituency representation on the committee. Jeff asked the group to send him any thoughts/comments they might have. The goal is to finalize the guidelines, appoint representatives from each constituency and be operating under the new guidelines by the next meeting (November).
Meeting Agenda Topics for the School Year
Gary Hanebrink suggested some topics the Committee might address during the 2005-2006 school year. Those were listed on the October 11 meeting agenda.
Emergency Response Maps for Academic Buildings
Gary exhibited copies of an emergency response map that will be placed in academic buildings. A directional indicator will be added to the maps.
Confined Space Rescue
University personnel have worked with the Charleston Fire Department to test and ensure our ability to perform an emergency rescue from “permit-required confined spaces”.
