April 2004 Minutes
Environmental Health and Safety Committee
April 13, 2004 Meeting Notes
Present: Gary Hanebrink, Heidi Hawkins, Dan Carpenter, Adam Due, Joe Wall, Karen Nantz, Joe Barron, Keith Kohanzo, Sandra Baumgartner, Robin Rennels, Jeff Boshart and Jeff Cross.
Institutional Biosafety Committee
Is an Institutional Biosafety Committee necessary? Jeff Cross will ask Dr. Chestnut to research the question in conjunction with the work he is doing on the Human Subjects Review and Animal Subjects Review Committees.
Study-Abroad
Gary recently attended a seminar at which the safety of students studying abroad was discussed. Adam Due said that University Police Department Dispatch could contact students studying abroad should an incident take place of which they should be made aware. Dispatch would need family contact information for those students. Adam will contact Bob Augustine and explain BOMACK, the UPD's incident software, and make the offer that Dispatch help with contacting students studying abroad should the need arise.
Safety Needs
Gary asked the Committee for safety needs. Discussion ensued relative to the purchase of a boom truck that would be used to get students out of burning high-rise buildings. The group thought, rather than making a $280,000 purchase, it would be wise to research the type of building rescue/evacuation type devices available, costs, what other schools and/or cities with high rise buildings use. Gary will check into these questions.
Jeff Boshart will get a list of Fine Arts safety needs to Gary Hanebrink. Sandra Baumgartner mentioned that an eye-wash station is needed in Room 2010 of the Life Sciences Bldg. (Gary Bolla's lab?). Karen Nantz pointed out that the emergency lighting in the basement of Lumpkin is not adequate to allow people to get out of classrooms if the power goes out. The University Police Department needs a more secure location for firearms/ammunition; the building door fixed and/or a new alarm system. Currently, the alarm is not transmitted anywhere (to officers in the field, for instance). It just sounds in the UPD building. Jeff Cross alerted Gary that when the fire alarm in Old Main sounded recently, staff in Admissions were unable to hear it.
