Environmental Health and Safety Committee

9/10/02 Meeting Notes

Present: Gary Hanebrink, Joe Wall, Mike Carter, Jr., Joe Barron, Keith Kohanzo, Mark Shaklee and Sandra Baumgartner.

Environmental Health and Safety Committee meetings will continue to be held at 3:15 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in the Facilities Planning and Management conference room. The next meeting is scheduled for October 8.

Homeland Defense

A new homeland defense measure requires that facilities that handle any potentially hazardous pathogens/toxins/biological organisms must appoint an officer to monitor and track those organisms while on their property and to report the presence of such to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Gary shared a list of specific pathogens/toxins/organisms that must be monitored. Gary has shared that directive with Dean Hanner. Dean Hanner will formulate a committee to identify campus use of any of the above-mentioned agents.

Fire Alarms and Training

So far this year, there have been fewer fire alarms. The training presented to Resident Assistants this year did not included fire extinguisher training. Thus, that training needs to be picked up in their next training session. Mark Shaklee reported that Housing is working on providing a “bed-shaker” and a strobe light (to act as fire alarms) for a hearing-impaired student. A lot of work has recently been done on the fire suppression system in Greek Court. That entire complex now has sprinklers. University Court is next in line for sprinklers.

Campus Lighting

Committee members suggested that someone tour the campus at night and check that lighting is still (was done last year) conducive to a safe night-time environment.
