5/14/02 Meeting Notes

Present: Gary Hanebrink, Joe Wall, Lynette Drake, Adam Due and Dan Carpenter.

The notes from the March 5, 2002 meeting were approved.

CART Agreement

The University has joined with several counties in a mutual aid agreement (CART) to respond to hazardous material(s) accidents/incidents. Gary and the University Police Department will be trained in how to handle those materials and will receive certification from the State Fire Marshall's Office.

Other Topics of Discussion

The May 14 issue of the University Newsletter reminded staff to review the Bomb Threat, Building Evacuation and Emergency Medical Safety IGPs. Adam Due thinks that the Bomb Threat Procedures IGP should be reviewed for possible revision because it says that the Vice President for Student Affairs must approve building evacuation in bomb threat cases. Chief Due thinks that more than one person should have that authority. In a bomb threat situation, UPD will ask someone who works in the building to volunteer to go in with them to look things over because someone who is there everyday is more likely to see something that shouldn't be there, is out of place, etc. However, no one is ever made to go in. All UPD Officers are familiar with campus buildings. They tour University buildings as part of their orientation in an effort to become familiar with buildings (crawl spaces, etc.)

The University has new chemical storage buildings that will ensure we meet EPA requirements.

Lynette Drake mentioned new federal legislation (HIPAA) relative to health information privacy issues. She and Dr. Wall will attend a national meeting in early June and will have more information then. They will keep the EH&S Committee informed. Health Services will send a questionnaire to campus departments in an effort to identify offices that have access to patient-identifiable health information. The University will be required to have policies and procedures in place by April, 2003.
