Environmental Health and Safety Committee

2/5/02 Meeting Notes

Present: Gary Hanebrink, Keith Kohanzo, Jeff Boshart, Doug Bock, Patti Bailey, Lynette Drake, Joe Wall, Kathy Cartwright and Chuck Phillips.

Bloodborne Pathogens Plan Review

Gary distributed a draft of the revised Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Plan and asked for comments. The following revisions were identified at the meeting:

  • In section 5 (Health Service section), the words “Director of Health Services” should be replaced with “Medical Director”
  • On page 6, there are two items numbered 3.4.11.13
  • “laboratory” should be changed to “laboratory/studio” throughout the document
  • On page 4, the last sentence of 3.4.7 will be changed to read “Approved sharp containers are puncture-resistant, red in color or labeled with a biohazard warning label, leak-proof on the sides and bottom and lockable.”
  • A section 5.4 should be added to section 5 (Health Service) that directs people to call the ER if Health Service is closed.

Gary asked the group to take the plan back to their offices for further review and to let him know should they have any more comments/suggestions for revisions.

Disaster Drill

The Business Affairs table-top disaster drill will take place March 4. If the EH&S Committee wishes, a committee member would be welcome to observe the drill. Sandy Bowman and Karen Nantz will help with the drill.

OSHA 200 Log

Committee members interested in getting a copy of the OSHA 200 log should contact Gary.

Other Topics of Discussion

The Chemical Hygiene Committee will meet February 12 and will discuss forming a sub-committee to look at Grad. Assistant lab/studio safety training for all departments and colleges. Any EH&S Committee members interested in serving on that sub-committee should contact Gary.

Gary mentioned a recent meeting with the Charleston Fire Department in which they alerted us that they are ready to begin charging the University $100 for each fire alarm over three, per University building. Further discussion will take place.

Gary asked the group to take a look at the new tamper-proof fire alarms at the Food Court and in Booth Library. There was some concern that people would mistakenly think they had triggered the alarm after pulling the first lever when, in actuality, there are two levers that must be pulled.

The notes from the January 8, 2002 meeting were approved.

Julie Griffin, Recording Secretary
