December Minutes
Environmental Health and Safety Committee
12/10/02 Meeting Notes
Present: Joe Wall, Karen Nantz, Kathy Cartwright, Gary Hanebrink, Dan Carpenter, Rob Bates and Sheila Poffinbarger.
Air Quality Issues Procedure
It appears that procedure(s) for reporting suspected air quality issues are not known to the campus community. Gary will draft an item, solicit Committee feedback and submit for issuance in the University Newsletter the procedure(s) to be followed in such instances.
Development of a Capital Improvement Project for Environmental Health and Safety Needs
Gary shared with the Committee a questionnaire that he had developed to use as a tool for identifying environmental health and safety needs to be included in a capital improvement project request and asked the group for input. The questionnaire will ultimately be sent to Deans and Directors. After reviewing the form, the Committee suggested:
- Don't call the form a questionnaire (the group was afraid people would not complete it), rather rename it “Request for Capital Improvement Funds”.
- Ask for estimated costs
- On question #1, add “art studios” after laser labs
- On question #3, do not abbreviate Indoor Air Quality
- Gary will add another section asking for emergency equipment needs
- Gary's name and phone number should be listed on the form so that people know who to talk to should they have questions
Safety Manual – Seat Belt Rules
The Committee reviewed Section 4-19 (Parking and Traffic Regulations) of the Campus Safety Manual. The Committee will recommend the following sentence be added to 4-19.2.1. “As always, to ensure the safety of everyone, it is imperative to wear safety belts at all times while inside a licensed motor vehicle.”
Chemical Storage Building Dedication
The Committee suggested that this topic be revisited since it is too cold now to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ceremony will likely take place spring 2003.
Safety Training
Gary would like to develop some type of web-based safety training. He asked the group for suggestions on how to develop and implement that training. The group suggested he work with CATS, ITS and/or the Training Department in developing the program.
