Environmental Health and Safety Committee

1/8/02 Meeting Notes

Present: Karen Nantz, Sandra Baumgartner, Chuck Phillips, Keith Kohanzo, Joe Wall, and Gary Hanebrink.

The December 4, 2001 meeting notes were approved.

In response to the request to President's Council that a disaster drill be held, Business Affairs (and possibly External Relations) will participate in a table-top disaster drill to be held March 8.

Fire/fire alarm costs totaled $2000 in FY01------a substantial decrease from FY00.

Gary asked the group to review the lab safety manual and to provide him with feedback/comments. Gary will then update and get the revised manual to the committee for further review/comment. Gary also asked the group to think about ways to provide lab safety training to Grad. Assistants. Gary has had some discussion with the new Training Coordinator, Sandy Bowman, about the development and presentation of an on-line course. Gary pointed out that accurate records are necessary to comply with OSHA (and other applicable agencies) training requirements. Those agencies require that records be kept detailing the types of applicable training that staff receive and when they receive the training. Keith Kohanzo suggested that Grad. Assistants develop portions of the lab safety manual that are pertinent to the department in which they work and also develop that portion of the on-line lab safety course.

The next EHS Committee meeting is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2002, in the Facilities Planning and Management conference room.
