Special Topics in Literature: Rhetorical Grammar 1200-1250 MWF
This course combines two elements critical for any writer: grammar and rhetoric, the patterns behind our language and the effects of the writer’s choices upon the audience. Rhetorical grammar, then, combines grammar and writing in a way that many argue grammar should be taught in the classroom. While not a prerequisite, English 2901 will provide an excellent background for this advanced grammar course. Upon completing this course, students will be much more aware of their abilities to manipulate sentences for emphasis, to select appropriate rhythms, points of emphases, and foci at the sentence level and beyond for the most effective statements for their purposes. This course is neither a basic grammar course nor a “rules-oriented” course. Rather, it is a course that teaches students to wed grammatical choices and rhetorical effects. Good writers have choices at hand for their expressions. This course arms students by acquainting them with these choices and the effects they produce. Students will discover a variety of styles latent in their language and will develop a greater command of and confidence in their writing. Two papers, two exams, and occasional writing problems comprise the written requirements of the course. (Group 3C)
