Richard Sylvia’s primary area of interest is nineteenth-century British literature. He has written extensively on Tennyson and more recently on Thomas Hardy and Florence Henniker. His work has appeared on such venues as The Thomas Hardy Journal, English Literature in Transition, The Victorian Newsletter, and The Journal of Narrative Technique. He has led several study abroad programs for Eastern students at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, and co-directed an integrated literature and art program that took place in New York, London, and Paris.
Richard Sylvia has been an active community volunteer for several years, serving with the Coles County Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, as school board member for Charleston Unit School District #1, and most recently as an advocate with Champaign County and Coles County CASA.
