Modern Drama 1230-1345 TR
This course will explore one of the most dynamic and ambitious periods in dramatic literature. Integrating a wide range of forms and perspectives, the reading list is robustly transnational, comprised of plays from Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Norway, Ireland, England, and America. The course approaches these works as both literary and theatrical texts, discussing the ways in which issues of staging clarify and complicate their political and philosophical visions. Requirements include short papers, two critical essays, a group project, a final exam, and energetic class participation. (Group 5)
