EIU Department of English

English Studies Summer Camp 2020

Overview

The English Department is seeking undergraduate students interested in holding positions as Residence Hall Supervisors and Recreational Coordinators for its week-long English Studies Summer Camp running from Sunday July 19 through Saturday July 25, 2020. Students awarded to these positions would receive a $250 stipend for their week of service, as well as free lodging and meals during this time period. This hands-on experience working with secondary students would benefit English majors (particularly English Language Arts teacher certification students) in many ways: developing event planning skills, gaining experience in supervisory roles, and so forth.

Responsibilities

Students awarded these positions will complete the majority of their work during the week-long camp session, however, a few brief planning/training meetings with the Camp Coordinator prior to the camp (at least one meeting which will occur in April) may be necessary. During the camp’s run, supervisors will be on hand from 11am on Sunday, July 19 until 2pm. on Saturday, July 25. Supervisors will be responsible for helping camp attendees with the check-in and check-out process, familiarizing participants with the facilities, planning and running afternoon and early evening recreation events (e.g. bowling outings, karaoke sessions, film viewings, poetry slams, etc.) and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of participants in the evening at the residence hall. Supervisors will also have ample free time from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to complete summer studies/projects while students attend their own camp sessions.

Application Process

The application for the Residence Hall/Recreation Supervisor position is available at www.eiu.edu/english/camp_eiustudents_app.php. Applications are due by March 25. Applicants will be selected by April 15. In order to have consistency among staff members from year-to-year, priority will be given to applicants who are available to serve in this position for two consecutive summers. (During the second summer they will help train the new RAs taking on this role.)
