The English Department at Eastern Illinois University offers majors in English and English with teacher certification; minors in English, professional writing, and creative writing; and the master of arts degree in English.

Students experience a strong sense of community in EIU's Department of English. The department works hard to keep the size of its classes small and personal. The Writing Center offers graduate students the opportunity to train as writing tutors and undergraduates the chance to work on their writing in a less structured setting than the classroom.

Our student organizations, Sigma Tau Delta and English Club, offer additional opportunities to get to know other students and faculty, and to learn about career opportunities.

The department's annual 5-week study abroad program allows English majors and other interested students to study great works of English literature at Harlaxton Manor and to travel to a variety of destinations with literary interest.
