Lupus is a deadly disease that was feared by the O'Connor family. Flannery's
father had this deadly disease and died when she was only fifteen yeaars
old. Flannery also had the disease and knew that her lifespan was limited.
She tried to do everything she could in the years before she became sick.
In December of 1950, while Flannery was working on her novel, she suffered
her first attack from lupus. She was forced to return home so that she
could be assisted by her mother. Despite all the trouble she had with the
disease, she still made time for her work. Three hours each day she'd spend
writing or critiquing her own work and on occassion, she'd speak to area
colleges. Unfortunely, Flannery's life was cut short, she died
at the age of 39, on August 3, 1964.
