Highlights of Robert Hayden's Life


 

1913---Robert Hayden is born Asa Bundy Sheffey to Ruth and Asa Sheffey.

1932---Graduated high school, and started attending Detroit City College.

1940---Published his first book of poems, titled Heart-Shape in the Dust.

1966---Awarded the grand prize for poetry at the First World Festival of Negro Arts. This was given to him for his book Ballad of Remembrance.

1976---Became the first black American to be appointed as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress.

1980---Robert Hayden died in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

2001---Magnificant Robert Hayden web site constructed by four scholars attending Eastern Illinois University.
