Complete the essay grid and bring it to the discussion on Friday, August 21, 2009 along with written responses to the following items: 1. Of the required essays, choose at least three that were your favorites and explain why. 2. Several of the essays explore the idea that beliefs change over time (examples: Steinem, Deutsch Earle). Why do you think some people’s beliefs change over time? (You may wish to consult with a member of an older generation for some insight.) 3. If you had the opportunity to ask any of the authors a question, who would you ask, what would you ask, and why? 4. Of the essays you read, choose three that illuminate a common theme. Discuss how they deepen your understanding of that idea. 5. Select an essay in which you disagree with the author. Explain how your position differs from that of the author’s view.
