
EASTERN READS CONTEST
Contest Description
Write an essay or submit a piece of art with an artist's statement that descrives your own personal belief. You may want to relate to one of the themes found in the book. Tell a story; be specific. Consider moments in your life when your belief was tested or formed. Your story should be real and related to the events in your life and illuminate one core velief that you have. Write in the first person (use "I"); tell us what you believe, not what you don't believe. Be personal.
Possible themes/topics include:
- Personal values and making sense of the world
- Behaving responsibly and/or what do we owe each other?
- Patriotism and citizenship
- What it means to be creative
- Family ties and the place of family in our lives
- Death and the afterlife
- The place of culture and diversity in our society and our lives
You may submit one entry. Take your submission to New Student Programs in the MLK Jr. Union. Include a cover sheet with your name, phone number, and email. Questions may be addressed to Dean Bonnie Irwin at bdirwin@eiu.edu.
- Art pieces may be a photograph, collage, drawing, mixed media project, or animation. They should be no larger than 36 inches. Digital work should be burned on a CD.
- Written pieces must be in 12-point, Times New Roman font with a one-inch margin, double-spaced, and between 500-750 words.
