2009 Maurice D. Shepherd Chemistry Contest

May 20th, 2009


Fifty-seven students from ten area high schools participated in the contest.

Dr. Gopal Periyannan of the Chemistry Department was the featured speaker at the post-test program.  He presented a timely and relevant talk based on his research on Biofuels. Dr. Periyannan joined the EIU chemistry department in Fall 2006. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Miami University (Ohio) in 2004.

Georgetown-Ridge Farm HS (teacher: Mr. Sam Corbin) was the top team winning the contest with a team average of 29.75.

Teams from Mahomet-Seymour, Robinson, Morrisonville, and Palestine placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. 

Logan Smith (Georgetown-Ridge Farm) and Sam Gegg (Mahomet-Seymour) tied for 1st place with scores of 42.75 and the same number of correct answers (tie breaker).

Kyle Wright (Georgetown-Ridge Fram) and Andy Venis (Oakwood) tied for 2nd place with scores of 32.75 and the same number of correct answers.

Kayla Goodwine (Palestine), Andrew Scott (Robinson), Jonathon Hawkins (Charleston), and Drew Riggs (Morrisonville) placed 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively.

These students were awarded plaques honoring their accomplisments.

The 2008 contest is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday May 12th, 2010. We hope you can make it.
