Propagation room. Replacement plants for the other greenhouse rooms as well as teaching materials are grown in this room. It contains a mist bed filled with Perlite for rooting cuttings.

A mist bed is on the east wall.

Plant cuttings are placed into containers filled with Perlite

Containers sit on a heating mat and misting nozzles frequently spray plants from above.

Plants to point out:

Baby rubber plant Peperomia obtusifolia is a bushy perennial with fleshy leaves and occasional spikes of minute flowers. The plain green species grows 12 in tall. Variegated cultivars, with leaves marbled in gray-green and cream or gold are more common.

Cape primrose - Most Streptocarpus hybrids have S. rexii as a major parent. They generally have a rosette growth habit with large, trumpet-shaped flowers in bright colors with a white throat. ‘Bethen’ bears multitudes of lilac-purple flowers; ‘Blue Heaven’ has flowers that are a strong mid-blue to pale purple; ‘Falling Stars’ has many small sky blue to lilac flowers; ‘Gloria’ has pale pink flowers; ‘Ruby’ has crimson red flowers; and ‘Susan’ has deep red flowers with yellow centers.

Elephant's earAlocasia occurs from tropical southern and Southeast Asia. They have long-stemmed heart-shaped leaves. Some hybrids have distinctive red or purple markings. The long-stemmed arum-like flowers are often obscured by the foliage and are not very showy. This genus is closely related to taro (Colocasia).

Giant dumbcaneDieffenbachia amoena is native to tropical America.  Their large oval leaves are often heavily marked with creamy white or yellow stripes or patches. The common name of dumb cane is due to their poisonous sap which makes the mouth and tongue swell, rendering speech impossible.

Prayer plantMaranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoviana’, known as rabbit tracks, has oval, light green leaves with brown blotches on either side of the central vein; the insignificant white to mauve flowers appear intermittently.

Spider plantChlorophytum comosum is native to moist coastal regions of South Africa, this species is one of the most popular plants for hanging baskets. Rosettes of narrow leaves up to 18 in long  form dense, untidy clumps. Long, branched flowering stems carry small star-shaped white flowers and small plantlets develop on the stems after flowering. The wild, green-leafed form is invasive in mild climates but several forms with cream- or yellow-striped leaves are more popular as garden or indoor plants.

Inch PlantZebrina pendula occurs in the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala.  Its silvery green leaves are bordered and striped with purple.  The lower leaf surfaces and stems are also purple.  It produces small, rose-colored flowers during spring and summer.
