18. Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is a slow-growing tree that requires nearly 300 years to reach maturity, and often lives twice that long. Hemlock poison, notorious in ancient times, and used by Socrates to poison himself, is not derived from this tree, but from a herbaceous member of the carrot family.
