8. Purple Leaf European Beech (Fagus sylvatica cv. 'Riversii’) is the most commonly grown form of this tree and closely resemble our native beech. It produces 2-3 small triangular nuts (actually seeds) enclosed in a small prickly burr. Beechnuts are delicious and are eaten by many woodland animals.

'Riversii' represents one of the most common forms of standard F. sylvatica with deep-purple leaves (often known as Copper Beech). The color can be deep-purple to approaching black in spring and early summer, but it may fade slightly as the season progresses. The habit is rounded and the plant may grow to 50' tall and wide.
