Post-baccalaureate students seeking a teaching certificate
through any of EIU's state approved certification programs must meet
the full intent of the respective programs. All previous course work,
either graduate or undergraduate, will be evaluated in terms of current
requirements. This will include general education, a major, and the

The purpose of this program of advanced
studies is to further the professional abilities and scholarly preparation
of teachers at levels ranging from preschool through the middle school
level. Upon completion of an approved course of study, the student is
awarded the Master of Science in Education degree. The preparation of
competent master teachers for classroom teaching and for other positions
of leadership in preschool, elementary, and middle level education is
among the department's highest goals.
Admission to the Graduate School is the first stage of admission for
students seeking candidacy for master's degrees offered through an academic
department. Academic departments grant degree candidacy in the second
stage of admission and may establish requirements in addition to those
of the graduate school. Online Application
Candidates admitted to the Master of Science - Elementary Education
program are assigned with a graduate faculty member for advisement.
A graduate study plan, which is developed by the student and his/her
advisor prior to the completion of 12 semester hours of coursework,
must be approved by the advisor, department chair, and the dean of the
Graduate School.
Degree candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive
oral examination during their final term of study. The
colloquy is presented to a committee of three graduate faculty members,
including one member outside the major department. To be placed on
the list of candidates for the following semester, complete the Orals
Application and meet with your advisor
to verify eligibility.
- Course work in at least three of the following areas of the elementary
curriculum is required as a part of the major field (i.e. reading,
language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies).
- To earn a master's degree a student must complete 30 semester hours
with a thesis requirement, or 32 semester hours for programs not requiring
a thesis.
- At least 17 semester hours must be in courses numbered 5000 and
above.
- Not more than 10 semester hours may be granted in courses numbered
4750 to 4999.
- No course in which a student receives a grade below "C" can be counted
toward the graduate degree.
- Up to 11 semester hours of course credit may be transfer credit
from schools with accredited graduate programs. Credit must receive
prior approval from the graduate coordinator.
- The entire program must be completed within six consecutive years.
- Apply for graduation prior to the 10th day of the final term of
study.
