Be prepared for your appointment
Please bring a Request to Add form to your registration advising session and be aware of the days and times assigned to the courses you will be discussing. Bring a copy of the long-range plan and updated checklist your advisor previously provided, and a list of the courses you plan to add to your schedule. Review your online degree audit (PAWS-DARS) and be aware of the remaining requirements/courses for your program. The online degree audit will also show which requirements for University Admission to Teacher Education have been documented, and which requirements remain, as steps for progression into professional coursework.
Who is my assigned advisor?
Please visit your PAWS account and click on the Student Records tab. Continue to View Student Information and select the current semester.
Due to the volume of students advised, appointments must be made in person by visiting Buzzard 2171. Each advisor provides a clipboard with appointment pages indicating the days and times they will be available to meet with students for the upcoming 1 to 2 weeks. Please sign up for a time that is convenient for your schedule and remember to record it in your planner or cell phone.
Can I call or email with a "quick question"?
Absolutely. However, quick questions often lead to lengthy conversations with reference to documents and/or websites. Since our departmental undergraduate advisors are available year-round, please make an effort to meet by appointment in the office for the most accurate and comprehensive exchange of information. Drop-in appointments may be available during some periods of the semester.
Check your EIU email!
Announcements and personal messages from university offices, instructors, and advisors will be sent to your EIU email (panthermail) account. It is very important for students to monitor this account on a daily basis. If you are having trouble with your panthermail account, contact 581-HELP for assistance.
What is required for my program of study?
Your advisor will assist you with understanding your catalog and curriculum requirements by using a checklist. Feel free to ask your advisor for an updated copy during your registration advisement appointment. Printable blank copies are available here. Students should become familiar with the online degree audit available through their PAWS account. Advisors can teach you how to use this tool as well.
Minimum Grade Requirement in Courses for Teacher Certification Programs
All students graduating after December 2011 with a teacher certification major must receive a grade of "C" or better in all courses, regardless where they are taken, used toward graduation including general education, professional education, major and minor courses, all university required courses, and electives. Furthermore, any course used for the purpose of adding endorsements to a teaching certificate must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
Schedule Planner is now available on PAWS to help students find class times that best fit into their busy schedules. Utilizing this system will allow students to schedule classes around work or other events such as practice. To find Schedule Planner, sign into PAWS, click on the Student menu, go to the Registration menu and look for the Schedule Planner link at the top of the items listed. For more information on using this tool, please go to http://www.eiu.edu/scheduleplanner/ .
*Please remember that choosing courses using Schedule Planner does not add them to your schedule. You may print the schedule created using Schedule Planner but you must still use the "Add or Drop Classes" link in PAWS to add courses to your schedule.
Students arranging Block Schedules: Instead of listing the individual Block courses in Schedule Planner, add "Breaks" to your weekly schedule. For example, Block students with morning arranged practicum should add breaks on MTWRF 8:00-12:35. Blocks with afternoon arranged practicum should add breaks on MTWRF 12:00-4:00 (or 4:30). This will prevent other AM (or PM) courses added into time slots that may appear available in the Schedule Planner program. Remember to take practicum travel into consideration. Practicum sites may be up to an hour from campus.
