Practicum Information

*NEW REQUIREMENT - EFFECTIVE July 1, 2012
With the new Illinois legislation passage of PA 097-0607, effective July 1, 2012, all candidates enrolled in a program leading to licensure in Illinois must pass all required content tests prior to beginning student teaching or internships.
What this means is that before a student can begin their Practicum (EDA 5890) course, they must have taken and passed the Illinois State Examination (Test 186 - Principal), regardless if applying for the Type 75 certification.
For students who plan to take their Practicum during the Fall semester, will need to sign up and take the exam and have the results back prior to July 1, 2012. Students who plan to take their Practicum during the Spring semester, will need to sign up and take the exam and have the results back prior to October 15, 2012.
Students must register for the exam through the ICTS website. You may get to the site by going through our webpage at http://www.eiu.edu/~edadmin/statecertification.php. Students who do not take the exam or successfully pass the exam cannot complete their Practicum course until they do so.

What is Practicum?
The Practicum course is offered only during the Spring and Fall semesters for students enrolled in the Master's in Educational Administration or Illinois Type 75 Certification programs only. The course is taken near the end of a student's plan of study. A student must have taken the EDA 5630 - Principalship course prior to taking the Practicum course.
To complete the course during the following semester, the application deadlines are as follows:
Spring Term Due in office by July 15 of previous year
(example: taking course Spring 2012, application is due July 15, 2011)
Fall Term Due in office by March 15
(example: taking course Fall 2011, application is due March 15, 2011)

Students are required to attend a Practicum Orientation Meeting prior to beginning their Practicum course. The meeting is usually scheduled for a Sunday afternoon in June for Fall Practicum and October for Spring Practicum. Students who plan to use tuition waivers for their Practicum course must notify the department as soon as possible, prior to the orientation meeting. Students do not need to register for this course, assignments are based on geographical location.
Prior to the practicum meeting the Department will host a workshop entitled: Finding your First Administrative Job. Attendance is optional. Faculty members will present information on resume development, finding job openings, preparing an application packet, preparing for an interview, and negotiating a contract.
