| Program Highlights | |
Due to Cape Town's extensive history as a port city, Cape Town's 3 million people are a blend of African, European, and Asian heritage and tradition. Cape Town is vastly diverse in landscape, people, and activities. You will find no shortage of things to do and learn in Cape Town. The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a well-established and well-respected South African university. It was founded in 1826 and is the oldest university in South Africa. It is a leader in teaching and research in the country. UCT is situated on a hillside slope of Table Top Mountain with views of the ocean and easy access to both the mountain and the water.

Choosing Courses |
|
At the University of Cape Town (UCT), you will take classes with South African undergraduate students. What we think of as academic divisions in the U.S. are called "Faculties" in South Africa. You can choose courses in departments within the following faculties: Commerce Engineering and the Built Environment Health Sciences Humanities Science **Depending upon prerequisite requirements and/or selectivity criteria in specific departments, you may not be eligible to take certain classes. The International Office at UCT will assist you in determining your eligibility. However, it is always a good idea to choose 2nd and 3rd choices for each class you would like to take.** |
|
| Student Life | |
In 2005, 4,374 international students studied at UCT (690 of those students were studying abroad). That's about 20% of the overall student population at UCT. On campus, you can easily get involved in one of UCT's over 100 student organizations or take in one of UCT's top-notch art exhibits or dance or theatre performances. UCT also has a large number of sports clubs which you can join. When in Cape Town, many students take advantage of the local attractions, such as Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was once imprisoned), the Cape Winelands, the Boulders Penguin Colony, the Cape Peninsula National Park (where you can see animals like baboons, buck, Cape Mountain zebra, and a large variety of birds), or Table Mountain, among others. |
|
| Housing | |
Housing on UCT's campus is very limited; therefore, most study abroad students live in off-campus housing which is set up by UCT Accommodation Office. In many cases, you will share a house with other study abroad students. Penny van Zyl is the Housing Co-ordinator for study abroad students and will help you make all housing arrangements.

| Foreign Entry Requirements | |
Passport Visa Travel Document Systems (TDS) can also provide you with helpful information on every country, including entry requirements, cultural information, travel conditions, economy, and more. You are strongly encouraged to read the U.S. State Department's Consular Information Sheet. It will provide you with a great deal of information to help you prepare for your trip. **Please be aware that you are responsible for obtaining the most up-to-date information on entry requirements. The Office of Study Abroad only provides general information, as visa regulations and procedures are constantly changing. Please consult the Consulate for more information. ** |
