Leader Pre-Departure Checklist

Before you leave:

____Attend a Responsible Study Abroad Seminar. If you are unable to attend one of these seminars before departure, schedule an individual appointment with the Director of Study Abroad. It is your responsiblity to schedule this appointment.

____Read Emergencies Abroad and Behavioral Problems and familiarize yourself with the health- and behavior-related forms in this handbook.

____Review the health and safety information about the destination that you will be traveling on the CDC's Travelers Health.

____Create an emergency action plan which includes a communication tree and buddy system and include this information in your required Pre-departure Orientation.

____Remind students to attend the general OSA Pre-departure Orientation.

____Make your overseas communications arrangements to comply with the Cell/Satellite Phone Policy.

____Turn in an Emergency Contact Form (with appropriate attachments)

____Register with the U.S. embassy and make sure your students do the same.

____Plan your required On-site Orientation with students

____Stay informed by reviewing Consular Information Sheets and Public Announcements associated with the country/countries in which you will be traveling (www.travel.state.gov, International Travel Section).

What to bring:

_____Make two copies of your passport as well as other important documents and phone numbers in case they are lost or stolen. Take one set of copies with you and keep them in a separate place from where you carry the originals (credit cards, ATM cards, etc.). Leave one set of copies at home with a family member or friend. Encourage your students to do the same.

_____Telephone # and address of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate nearest to the program site: http://usembassy.state.gov.

_____Name, address, and telephone # of an English-speaking doctor at or near the program site (this information can be obtained from the U. S. Embassy or consulate).

_____Name, address, and telephone # of nearest large hospital which provides urgent/emergency care.

_____Name, address, and telephone # of local police.

_____Directions for direct AND operator-assisted dialing to the U.S. from site, including access codes as well as acceptability of coins, telephone cards, and calling cards.

_____Copies of all participant passports who are participating in the Program.

After you arrive:

____Obtain cell phone numbers for faculty leaders

____Obtain cell phone numbers for students if possible

____Share cell phone numbers with students

____Remind the group about the emergency action plan, the communication tree, and the buddy system

____Designate primary and secondary meeting places

____Designate a student leader in case faculty leaders are incapacitated or unavailable.
