What are faculty-led programs?

Faculty-led study abroad programs are both international experiences and academic courses designed, directed, and taught by Eastern Illinois University's departments and faculty. These programs are co-administered by the Office of Study Abroad and the School of Continuing Education, and generally take place over the summer or spring break; semester programs are encouraged as well.

How are they supported?

Faculty-led programs are driven by tuition-recovery, program and administrative fees, and therefore require a minimum student enrollment to avoid cancellation. This minimum student enrollment is determined by the Director of Off-Campus Programs in conjunction with the Faculty Director. The deadline for obtaining the minimum enrollment is at 4:30pm on the day of the student application deadline, which is currently February 2nd (for Summer Programs).

Students pay EIU In-State Tuition, a Program Fee, and Administrative Fees.

  • Tuition: Covers the faculty directors' salaries
  • Program Fee: Covers the faculty directors' expenses and all the student/program expenses.
  • Admin Fees: Cover the services of the School of Continuing Education and the Office of Study Abroad.

How are they approved?

1. A faculty member, in consultation with his/her department or an academic program (i.e. Asian Studies Minor), submits a program proposal to the Office of Study Abroad before or on the deadline.

2. Shortly after the proposal deadline, copies of the program proposals are made for the Study Abroad Subcommittee (SASC) of the IPAC to review.

3. SASC reviews the proposald according to published Program Selection Criteria. After reviewing all proposals, SASC will recommend those proposals that best meet the stated criteria. Faculty for new programs will be called in for questioning.

4. SASC prepares a summary of its recommendations and presents this summary to IPAC during its last meeting of the semester. IPAC then votes on whether to approve, approve with contingencies, or deny each program proposal.

Department-led Programs

Department-led Programs are longstanding study abroad programs that have developed the following characteristics and have been approved by OSA/IPAC as such:

  • Sustainability. Operated under the direction and full support of an Academic Department or through a formally acknowledged agreement of support and direction between two or more departments, not primarily through the individual efforts and actions of an individual or small group of EIU faculty members within a department or faculty members of two or more departments.
  • Shared Governance. At least three different faculty members or sets of co-directors have directed and successfully run the program.
  • Stability/Development. The program has run at least 4 times in the course of  8 consecutive years.
