Dear Prospective Intern,

Thank you for your interest in our Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS)-Dietetics option with a Nutrition Education Emphasis. We have a very diverse program with our Dietetic Internship (DI) providing educational experiences in the areas of foodservice, management, clinical, and community nutrition. As an added benefit of the uniqueness of our program, you, as a graduate, will be awarded the credential of a Nutrition Education Specialist by the Society for Nutrition Education. The Dietetic Internship is currently granted accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, Il 60606-6995, 312/899-4876.

Generally, students complete two semesters of graduate-level coursework at the University and then a minimum of 1080 clock hours in one of our seven affiliated medical centers. The DI component of the graduate program begins in different months of the year, but usually after the completion of the advanced coursework. In addition, students who have not completed an undergraduate program in family and consumer sciences may have up to 6 semester hours of undergraduate FCS course deficiencies to complete. Upon completion of all degree requirements (graduate coursework, the Internship, and any undergraduate deficiencies), students are eligible to take the dietetic registration examination.

All applicants to the DI must participate in computer matching. Applicants should request instructions and mark sense card to prioritize their DI preferences. You may request this material from your didactic program director or from D&D Digital Systems, 304 Main St, Suite 301, Ames, IA 50010 (512) 292-0490. This request should be made to allow time for submitting by the February 15 or September 25 postmark deadline. Please be aware of a $50 charge for the computer matching.

As our DI is offered only as part of our MS in FCS, you will also be admitted into graduate school. In addition, in the spring of the year we extend offers for several graduate assistantships within the School. A few of the benefits of graduate assistantships include a tuition waiver for two semesters (summer term tuition waiver is also possible); a monthly stipend of $750; and opportunities for teaching, research, and other creative activities.

Sincerely,

Karla Kennedy-Hagan, PhD, RD, LDN
