Danville Veterans Administration Hospital
VA Illiana Health Care System (VAIHCS) provides primary, secondary, intermediate medical and surgical care, acute/extended psychiatric care, rehabilitation medicine, extended long-term care and skilled nursing home care to veterans primarily residing in central Illinois and west central Indiana. VAIHCS offers a full cadre of ambulatory care including mental health and substance abuse services. There are 422 authorized beds including 193 nursing home beds in the facility. VAIHCS is also responsible for the healthcare services offered at Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Peoria, Decatur, Springfield, Effingham and Manteno, Illinois, and West Lafayette, Indiana. The population of veterans in the service area is approximately 152,667. Patients requiring specialty care are referred to appropriate tertiary care VA facilities. Administrative support is provided for two Readjustment Counseling Centers in Peoria and Springfield, Illinois as well as two VA National Cemeteries in Springfield and Danville. Active affiliations have been established with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Champaign-Urbana, for both medical residents and advanced students in the medical scholars (dual degree) program. We are also affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria for residents in internal medicine and family practice. An active affiliation also exists with Indiana University School of Optometry, Bloomington, Indiana for residents in hospital-based optometry. A total of 24 residents in internal medicine and family practice and one in optometry are assigned to VAIHCS. Various affiliations with institutions of post-secondary education for trainees in associated health care professions are established.

Food Service Management
A variety of experiences is offered in the following areas:
  • Patient menu is a non-select 3 week cycle that is computerized and offers many patient preferences
  • Patients are fed utilizing an Advanced Meal Delivery System
  • Management- Become familiar with government system. Work with Chief, Nutrition & Food Service, Food Production & Service Manager, Food Service Supervisors and Food Service Workers to gain a variety of experience
  • Clinical Rotations
    A comprehensive experience is provided through:
  • Inpatient care including med/surgery, psychiatry, Nutrition Support, and Nursing Home care
  • Outpatient counseling including Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia, weight loss, GI disorders, renal disease, and healthy eating
  • Community service including Home Based Primary Care and Community Based Clinics.

  • The clinical staff includes 6 staff dietitians including a CDE and a part-time dietitian at outpatient clinic.
