Frequently Asked Questions

You will need to contact Dr. Burns to begin a transcript review for undergraduate dietetic deficiencies. Official transcripts from all universities and community colleges attended need to be mailed for review. The review will include a tentative timeline for completion for all deficiencies and graduate coursework. The cost for the review is $20 payable to Eastern Illinois University and mailed to Dr. Burns, School of Family and Consumer Sciences, 600 Lincoln Ave., Charleston, IL 61920.

When does EIU's Dietetic Internship accept applications?
We participate in both the April and November computer match.  We accept between 8 to 12 students in the April match and 4 to 8 in the November match.

EIU accepts the 2004 ADA DI Application Form only!

What is EIU's minimum GPA requirement for the Dietetic Internship?
2.75 cumulative GPA is required for admission into the Graduate School as well as the Dietetic Internship.
Does EIU's Dietetic Internship require a GRE score?
Yes.
When does the Dietetic Internship begin?
Usually students complete two semesters of graduate course work and then begin their 7 month long Dietetic Internship in one of our seven affiliated medical centers.  Internship placements are usually in January, May/June, and August/September.
What does a complete application include?

Where should the completed application packets be sent?
a) The Graduate School application is sent to The Graduate School, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL 61920. Admission into Graduate School is required to be matched with our Dietetic Internship.
b) The Dietetic Internship application is sent to Dr. Karla Kennedy Hagan, School of Family and Consumer Sciences, Eastern Illinois University, 600 Lincoln Avenue, Charleston, IL 61920. 
c) The Graduate Assistantship application is sent to Dr. Frances Murphy, Graduate Coordinator, School of Family and Consumer Sciences, Eastern Illinois University, 600 Lincoln Avenue, Charleston, IL 61920.  A complete GA application includes the application form, official transcripts, a personal statement of goals presented on a separate sheet of paper, current resume, and two letters of recommendation.
Is a thesis required?
Writing a thesis is optional.  If you choose to write a thesis, then you will complete a total of 36 hours of coursework.  If you choose not to write a thesis, you must complete a total of 38 hours of coursework.  The Dietetic Internship is the equivalent of 12 semester hours.
When will the Verification Statement be issued?
The Verification Statement, which indicates your completion of our graduate program, will be issued once a semester after ALL graduate requirements are completed - not when the Dietetic Internship is completed.
What is the Nutrition Education Specialist?
The Nutrition Education Specialist certificate is awarded at the end of your  program by the Society for Nutrition Education.
