Why Choose EIU?
Eastern's Communication Studies major offers a wide range of opportunities. Students can pursue options in Public Relations, Corporate Communication, Interpersonal Communication, or Communication, Society and Pop Culture. For students interested in Mass Communication, there are concentrations in Electronic Media Production and Broadcast News. The major is structured so that students can either jump into their desired course of study as a freshman, or test the waters by taking some introductory courses before deciding on an option. Communication Studies majors are not required to declare a minor, but many do and the department participates in Interdisciplinary Minors like Advertising, Broadcast Meteorology, Film Studies, Health Communication, and Public Relations.

Communication Students majors receive personal attention from the faculty. Class sizes are small with full-time instructors who get to know their students. Faculty mentor and assist the students with research and other projects outside of class. EIU Communication Studies majors build relationships with faculty that last long after they graduate from Eastern.

EIU Communication Studies majors have many opportunities to be engaged in activities outside the classroom that enhance their learning. Students can join a student organization, work at WEIU-TV or WEIU-FM, participate in the annual Communication Day or Broadcast Job Fair, study abroad, or join the EIU Speech Team.
Adventure Down Under
It's one thing to read or hear about the awe-inspiring sights and life-altering adventures available to students who participate in the Department of Communication Studies' study abroad trip to Australia and New Zealand. It's something totally different, however, to see the day-to-day wonders of this monthlong journey captured in a stunningly beautiful video like this one produced by senior Comm Studies major Keith Sutterfield.
