Communication studies majors can select from several different tracks of study.

Communication, Society and Pop Culture Option

Provides students with a comprehensive approach that examines the role of discourses and practices that create and sustain social systems. Students will be trained to put critical theories into practice by critiquing, designing, and implementing messages in various outlets.  (Example of 4-year study plan)

Corporate Communication Option

Communication is identified as one of the top skills required in any organization. This option provides students with the knowledge, skill, and perspectives to work in positions with high communication demands. (Example of 4-year study plan)

Interpersonal Communication Option   

Designed for students interested in developing knowledge and skills that facilitate effective communication in personal, professional, and group contexts.  Graduates with this option are particularly well-prepared to work with individuals and groups from varying backgrounds, with differing needs and interests, and where the goals of communication are to resolve problems or disputes.  (Example of 4-year study plan)

Mass Communication Option: Broadcast News Concentration

Designed for students interested in a career in radio/TV news, including anchors, writers, reporters, producers, videographers, weather and sports anchors.  (Example of 4-year study plan)

Mass Communication Option:  Electronic Media Production Concentration 

Designed for students interested in learning the theories and techniques of radio and TV broadcasting, as well as non-broadcast applications. Emphasis is on non-news content.  Students may select from four different emphases:

  • Alternative Media Arts Emphasis:  Designed for students interested in video production, but not the traditional TV industry.  May include independent or internet video production.
  • Audio Emphasis:  Designed for students interested radio broadcasting or audio production.
  • Multimedia Emphasis:  Teaches students to produce content for the internet, including social networking.
  • Video Emphasis:  Designed for students who would like to work in the television industry or non-broadcast video production.

Public Relations Option

This option prepares students to function effectively in the field of public relations. Program emphasis is on preparing students for public relations positions in corporations, non-profit organizations and PR agencies. (Example of 4-year study plan)

Students should consult Eastern Illinois University's undergraduate catalog for help selecting general education courses, meeting the university's foreign language requirement, and identifying appropriate elective courses.
