Dr. Mark Borzi is stepping down as chair of the Eastern Illinois University Department of Communication Studies, effective July 1, 2012.  After serving as chair for eleven years, Dr. Borzi will take a leave of absence and return to teaching at Eastern in January of 2013.

“I have not had much of a break in 31 years," Dr. Borzi said.  "I have never had a sabbatical nor had more than a few weeks off during any one summer.  It is time for me to take some time and to retool.”

During his time as chair, the department experienced a great deal of change, including major revisions in the curriculum and advising on the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Dr. Borzi's tenure also saw expanded student internship opportunities, introduction of a study abroad program, the hiring of almost an entirely new faculty, major upgrades in technology and student labs, departmental participation in CENCERE, and work with the faculty to adopt changes in policy and procedures.

Through all of these changes, the Communication Studies department became stronger and was recognized for its efforts by receiving awards such as the Chair Leadership Award and the Excellence in Service to Nontraditional Students.  Communication Studies students also received awards in conjunction with WEIU and via faculty/student efforts.  Faculty also received numerous awards including University Achievement and Contribution Awards, Student’s Distinguished Faculty Award, and the first ever Michael R. Hoadley Instructional Technology Award.

Asked why he chose this time to step down, Dr. Borzi responded, “It is time for different leadership to step up.  With all the hiring we have done, the issues and opportunities we have, it is time for someone new to chart the course of things to come.”

“While on leave I plan to take some time for myself, to retool and re-energize so that I can return to my first love, teaching.”  Dr. Borzi plans to do some traveling that is academically related and then work on several new projects related to study abroad, research, and technology, and to prepare for the classes he will be teaching when he returns in January of 2013.

Mike Bradd, who has been the Associate Chair of Communication Studies for the past eight years, will serve as Interim Department Chair from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.  Eastern plans to conduct a nationwide search for a new Chair of Communication Studies during the 2012-2013 academic year.
