Graduate Admission Requirements/Procedures

Admission Requirements

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. A minimum of 18 semester hours of coursework in communication.
  3. A GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  4. A completed application.

If your undergraduate degree is not is communication and you are not sure if you have the required 18 semester hours in communication courses, send a copy of your transcript to the graduate coordinator, who will evaluate your coursework to determine if you have met the requirement. If you have not met the requirement, the graduate coordinator will counsel you on what you can do to make up the deficit.

Application Procedure

If you are interested in enrolling in the graduate program in the Department of Communication Studies, you need to take the next step and submit an application. A complete application to the university includes the following:

Send to the graduate school:

  1. An application for admission to the graduate school with a check for $30 to cover the application fee.
  2. A copy of your official transcripts.

Send to the graduate coordinator:

  1. Three letters of recommendation attesting to academic ability.
  2. An academic writing sample to demonstrate your preparation for graduate level writing.
  3. A goals statement (explaining why you want a master's degree in communication and why from EIU).
  4. A resume outling relevant work or academic experience.

If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, you also need to submit a graduate assistantship application.

The department accepts applications to the graduate program throughout the year. Graduate assistantship applications are normally accepted through the middle of February; a decision for the next academic year comes within a month.
