Graduate CDS Programs

The master's degree program is a professional entry degree that requires 46 to 47 semester hours of advanced study. The program includes 28 semester hours of core courses required for all candidates and 6 semester hours of special topics selected by the student for specialization and interest, 7 semester hours of advanced practicum, 3 semester hours of medical internship, and 3 semester hours of educational internship. In addition, each student must complete a minimum of 375 total hours of practicum.

Typically, graduate candidates require 6 consecutive full-time semesters to complete their master's degree. A usual program includes 4 semesters of advanced coursework and practicum followed by two 14-week internships, 1 in an educational setting and 1 in a medical setting. The educational internship is usually completed in the state of Illinois. Medical internships may be completed nationwide. Candidates may select from two alternatives in the graduate program. The first alternative requires candidates to complete the program outlined below and take oral and written comprehensive exams during their final semester of graduate school. The second alternative requires students to complete a creative research project/thesis instead of exams and take fewer special topic courses.
