Jill Fahy, M.A.

Mrs. Fahy joined the Department in the fall of 2004 as an Instructor; in 2006, she accepted a position as Assistant Professor. Mrs. Fahy provides clinical teaching for undergraduate and graduate students in clinical practicum (CDS 4900, 5900) and diagnostic practicum (CDS 5910). Her clinical supervision encompasses a wide range of children and adolescents with deficits in executive functions impacting social communication and pragmatics, all of whom are working to develop adaptive life skills. Mrs. Fahy teaches graduate courses in Acquired Language Disorders (CDS 5300), Development of Executive Functions (Special Topics-CDS 5400) and Right-Hemisphere Communication Disorders (Special Topics-CDS 5400). She has previously taught Motor Speech Disorders (CDS 5100). In addition to teaching and supervision duties, Mrs. Fahy lectures nationally on the assessment and treatment of executive function disorders and associated communication imprairments, and is co-author of The Source for Development of Executive FUnctions. Her areas of interest include brain-behavior relationships for social competence and cognitive-communication within the frontal lobe and right hemisphere, traumatic brain injury, and vocational rehabilitation. Prior to teaching at EIU, Mrs. Fahy provided series primarily to populations with acquired neurological deficits in medical settings. She was also affiliated with other academic programs as clinical supervisor and adjunct faculty member. Mrs. Fahy serves as the Track Chair for acquired neurological communication disorders for the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ISHA) and as Chair of the assessment committee within the CDS Department of EIU.

Research Interests:

  • Development of the prefrontal cortex of the human frontal lobe, particularly in atypical cases for adolescents with co-morbid disorders of communication and social behavior.
  • Also interested in developing treatment protocols to promote normal development of self-regulation, planning, organization, decision-making, impulse control, flexibility in thinking and strategy development for more independent and successful communication in academic, social, and community settings.
  • Interested in developing treatment protocols for atypical social communication and behavior in children with Asperger's syndrome
