Faculty Update

Angela (Beckman) Anthony was married to Graham Anthony on October 6, 2007 in a small ceremony at The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. Angela and Graham spent most of the summer in Charlottesville, VA where Angela worked on her research while Graham kept up with a busy work/social schedule! Angela served as the President-Elect for ECISHA during the 2007-2008 academic year, and is now the President for the 2008-2009 academic year. Beginning this fall, she will also serve her fi rst year on the ISHA Executive Board as the Vice-President-Elect for Professional Affairs. She is looking forward to year three as an assistant professor at EIU, when she will continue to teach Intro and Language Acquisition, as well as co-teach Aural Rehabilitation and Communication Modalities.

Trina Becker continues to further her love and knowledge in the world of AAC. She has begun to present across the state on the topic and thoroughly enjoys educating and inspiring parents, educators and fellow SLPs. Her theme son for the summer was "Take Me Out to the Ballgame!" Jonah (7) and Jackson (4) both played baseball this summer and the family spent 4 to 5 nights a week at the ball diamond. Through the heat, dust, and numerous dollars spent at the concession stand, Trina enjoyed cheering for her boys and their teammates. The boys are both very active and love to play basketball and swim. In fact, they grew fins this last summer as they were at the pool at least three days a week. Family vacations included several mini vacations to St. Louis, a trip to the Ozarks in June, and a big 'Ungrund' family vacation to Branson in August. Trina is planning a big trip with her husband in the fall for their 10 year wedding anniversary.

Beth Bergstrom spent the summer developing and teaching a new pediatric feeding course. The master schedule for summer was full of baseball games, camps for swim, soccer, basketball, and science, swim meets, and fi nally a trip to Florida. Mason (9) likes rocks and swimming; he will be something great someday. He is the oblivious, hyper, annoying one that Brad says acts just like his mom. Reese (8) is the confi dent, social one that is more worried about his hair and what he is wearing than anything else. He eats, sleeps, and breathes baseball through the summer. Cooper (5) just wants to be as big as his big brothers. He is actually the perfect combo of the big boys. Rolen (who I want to re-name Duncan since Scott Rolen got traded to Toronto), our puppy, lives up to his name and is in on every ball game. He fi elds the ball and then chases the boys home!! Life is always fun and interesting and provides loads of good stories to share with students.

Lynn Calvert has now been at Eastern for 15 YEARS!!!!! Can you believe it? The time has fl own. A couple of major changes have occurred in the last year. Scott has changed jobs and is now a grain merchandiser for several elevators in the Newton area. And then, of course there is also the fact that there is an empty nest...Eric left for college this fall. But it really isn't so bad since he is attending EIU and never turns down a meal that Mom offers to buy.

Chris Chambers continues to provide supervision for undergraduate and graduate clinicians and advisement for students in the undergraduate program. Daughter Ali just turned 14, will be a freshman in high school , and wants to know when she can drive. Her fi rst test is on the riding mower. Chris continues to enjoy working in the yard, traveling, and talking with alumni at conventions. The clinic inventory continues to grow with new AAC hardware and software programs. Jill Fahy keeps busy, as always, with family and work. Her daughter Kate, who is 9, has taken up horse riding lessons, and is completely enthralled with this. Kelsey, 16, is spending the summer with Mrs. Fahy's brother and sister-in-law in Evanston as she's their live-in nanny. Emily, 21, just graduated from EIU this May with a degree in psychology and starts graduate school in the fall. Mrs. Fahy lectured several times this past year in various places all over the country. Her husband Mike often accompanies her, just to enjoy the time away. There hasn't been any time to paint lately, but she does sing at mass and sometimes plays the piano, as well. Mrs. Fahy's household has had a rotating list of pets this past year, including a cat, an albino gecko, a mouse, a chinchilla, and fi nally something called Aquasaurs. The cat had to go live at Grandma', the mouse died, the gecko was given away; the Aquasaurs eventually ate each other in their own tank, but the chinchilla (Theodore) lives on.

Frank Goldacker completed his term on the ISHA Executive Board and is looking forward to a few additional weekends without commitments so he can spend more time at the lake. He continues as Chair of the Illinois Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Licensure Board. Emma completed her sophomore year at SIUE. She is majoring in nursing and begins her clinicals in the fall. Hard to believe she turns 21 this fall!

Linda Huddlestun is still managing the department from her desk in the main offi ce. She enjoys spending time with her two grandsons, Braden (7) and Jacob (2), who keep her on her toes. Husband, Eric, retired this year and seems to keep quite busy, but mostly enjoys time with the grandboys. When asked to comment for this newsletter, Linda said, "I'm still here!" She enjoys hearing from past students, so keep her informed of your whereabouts and she'll make sure you receive the annual departmental newsletter. The students and faculty continue to appreciate all of Linda's hard work and patience, as well as the tasty treats that she bakes.

Gail Richard took time to return to her theatre roots by directing "Twelve Angry Men" this year. The cast ranged from 25-75 years of age and included her husband (John Oertling), the Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities (Jeff Lynch), and the father of a graduate student (Rick Addison)! Her terms on the NCAA Management Council and ASHA Legislative Council both ended in the spring, but she has already fi lled in the time by chairing an ASHA committee. John is looking forward to moving the Theater Department into the beautiful new Doudna Fine Arts Center.

Jean Smitley completed her three-year term serving as the Vice President for Professional Services for ISHA this past year. It was a great learning experience and a chance to contribute and learn more about the issues facing SLP's and audiologists in Illinois. Those of you who took CDS 3900 probably remember it was a one credit course with a lot of work! The course was revised and is now a two credit hour course. Former graduate student and alum, Rud Watson completed a comprehensive research project in the area of supervision and Mrs. Becker, Rud, and she presented at both ISHA and ASHA last year. Once spring 2008 semester came to a close, the Smitley family spent time at the ballpark with son Ryan (9), at swim meets with daughter Erin (13), and transporting the kids to various camps and events. A family vacation was nearly impossible to schedule, so it was decided the family would save and go somewhere tropical for spring break 2009.

Rebecca Throneburg had a great year with a sabbatical in the spring. She used that time to fi nish up data analysis and work on a couple of journal articles from the Stuttering Research Grant that she has had with the University of Illinois. She also brushed up on her adult treatment skills by working as a PRN speech pathologist at St Mary's in Decatur with EIU alum Janelle Issacs, and covered a maternity leave for a parttime school SLP in Assumption, Illinois. The Throneburg family spent 11 days in Florida at the end of February - Disney and the beaches were terrifi c. Sarah (8) and Jacob (11) swam with the dolphins. Summer time was spent at Lake Shelbyville and at the ball park - all three kids played baseball/softball now that Rachel (5) began t-ball this year.

Tina Veale just completed her second year at EIU. Dr. Wilson handed over the reigns of Graduate Program Coordinator this year, and Dr. Veale really enjoyed working with the grads in this new role. Dr. Veale serves as Vice President for the Division of Educational Development for the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and enjoys helping the state organization plan and present one of the best state conferences in the country. She also helped pilot the Charleston Autism Team (ChAT) in 2007-08, an alliance between EIU and Charleston schools to support individuals with autism spectrum disorders, their families and educators. On a personal note, her oldest son, Danny, graduated with a bachelor's of music degree from Michigan State University in August, 2007, and is beginning graduate study in political science. He will be married in Michigan in March 2009. Her son, Mike, lives and works in Cincinnati, Dr. Veale's hometown. He was married on June 26, 2008, Dr. Veale's 32nd wedding anniversary. Daughter, Amanda, will graduate from EIU in 2009 with a double major in English and psychology, and plans to attend graduate school to obtain a master of fi ne arts in creative writing.

Brenda Wilson has a new granddaughter, Olive Lucille. That makes eight, six boys and two girls. Eva is very happy to have a little sister. The highlight of her spring was fi nding 120 mushrooms in her yard! MMMM! Dr. Wilson gave up the Graduate Coordinator position and is looking forward to having some time off this summer. She has lots to do with gardening, canning, reading, and visiting the grandkids. Dr. Wilson was promoted to full Professor this year. She enjoys seeing former students, so come by for a visit.
