o
The ACS-SA
(American Chemical Society-Student Affiliates) has been very active
lately. Our numbers are the highest we
have seen in awhile. We sold goggles and
talked to all of the general chemistry and organic
class during the second week of class. A
group of students traveled to Jefferson elementary school on Wednesday January
9, 2008 to perform demos for the 4th, 5th, and 6th
grade students. We also invited all of
the groups from the College of Sciences to our Scene It? night and food drive on January
25, 2008.

The department
has begun tutoring again this semester.
Chemistry major work each semester as tutors for general and organic
chemistry.
o
The department is
preparing for and external review this semester.
o
The department is
looking into adjusting the management concentration.
o
We have a new
secretary this semester, Ms. Jennifer
Cornelius
o
The ACS national meeting is being held in New Orleans from April 6- April
10, 2008. So far both Dr. and Dr.
Peebles and 2 students from the department will be attending and presenting
research.

faculty attending, some graduate and undergraduate students attending

Economics

The Economics
Department is interviewing four people for an open position. These four people will meat with staff and
students to decide if the Eastern teaching position is right for them. The Student feedback is important in the
decision of who will receive this position.
o
Following the
econ club meeting on February 12, there is a Pizza Party at 4 pm.
o
Econ club is also
encouraging students to get involved with the Outstanding Faculty Award.

Geology/Geography

Mathematics
and Computer Science
o
Freshmen
scholarship applications due Friday (February 1).
§ Decisions will be made late March or early April.
§ 3-6 awards expected, depending on the quality of the
applications.
o
Department
committee will review lower-level math textbook changes.
§ Currently testing an upgrade to electronic homework
system for Calculus I sections.
§ This implementation raises funding questions for
dealing with homework system accounts subscriptions.
o
LaTeX installfest
Thursday (January 31).
§ Professional typesetting and markup language.
§ Used in mathematics and sciences graduate programs for
producing dissertations and professional journal submissions.
o
Department hopes
to secure two annually contracted faculty members soon to fill positions which
will soon open due to two retirees.
o
High School Math
Contest will take place in Old Main on February 23.
§ Students from regional high schools will compete in a
contest covering different areas of mathematics.
