Dear COS Students and Faculty,

On Eastern’s campus there are many recognized student organization’s (RSO’s) working to give back to their local community and student body.  As a service project, the College of Sciences Student Advisory Board (COS SAB) is working towards starting something that will continue to give back to the EIU student body for years to come.

The 11 members of the COS SAB are initiating a campaign to endow a fund that would provide an annual award to a COS student who has experienced adversity which affected their college career.  The award will be awarded to student(s) who has had to overcome some type of hardship during their college career.  In an application, students would be required to describe their adversity and need in a written statement, provide one letter of support from an EIU professor, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and be seeking a degree in one of the College of Sciences majors.  Each year this award will be made during the College of Science’s annual ScienceFest.  For this initiative to fully develop, the COS SAB needs the help of the students and faculty of the College of Sciences.

In order to endow this award fund through the Eastern Illinois University Foundation, the members of the COS SAB must raise at least $5,000.  The goal of the current year is to raise $1700 by the end of this semester.  The COS SAB is contacting College of Sciences’ RSOs and COS faculty to assist in reaching this goal and making this fund a reality.  Donations of any amount will assist us in achieving our goal!

The initial award of $250 will be given at ScienceFest 2006 with the monetary award provided by the College of Sciences.  Members of the COS SAB have application forms.

On behalf of the College of Sciences Student Advisory Board, I thank you for your consideration of a contribution.  For more information and answers to your questions, please contact Justin Cummings 773-319-3628.

Sincerely,
