                        1.   Speaking in Foundation class on Nov 2nd (Wednesday)

                        2.         Program “Getting to know Katrina”

                            i.  Will have hurricane talk (Dr. Stimac, Bill Lovecamp)

                           ii.   Maybe will have students who have been impacted - Hurricane victims student contact Brenda Majors

                        3.         Scholarship Thoughts

                           i.   Will be given out based on personal circumstances

                          ii.    Hope to raise money from department gift fund and RSO's

                         iii.    Need endowment of $5,000- COS will pay for first couple of years

                         iv.    Desire to advertise fundraising in DEN
            B.         Outstanding Faculty Award

                        1.         No meeting yet will have one before next COS-SA meeting

            E.         PYS (physics)

                        1.         High school engineering compotation second week of November

                        2.         Tutoring T, R 1-3 PM and W 10-12 AM

                        3.         Society of physics students went to conference in Louisville

                                    i.          Department funded

                                    ii.          Talked to Noble prize winner Dr. Letterman

                        4.         Society planning trip to NASA

                        5.         Society now an official RSO

            F.         BIO

                        1.         Darwin Day essay of 500 words due in February ($200-300)

                        2.         Speaker 27th October on “West Nile Virus” at 4:30

                        3.         Speaker Nove 10th on the importance of salmon at 4:30

                        4.         Botany club trip to Missouri Biotoncial Gardens

                        5.         Holding a third caramel apple sale in department

                        6.         Speak last week on Nature

                        7.         Going to Douglas Heart Nature Preserve to learn to make Pinecone reefs    

                        8.         Concerned TA's are not getting deserved credit hours

            G.        GEO

                        1.         Getting certified by ESRI for GIS software

                        2.         Faculty has updated course information

                        3.         2 study aboard opportunities to Germany/ Poland or Mexico

                        4.         3 undergraduate research awards given out

                        5.         Their numbers are growing (always good news)

                        6.         November 14 and 15th guest speakers on awareness

                        7.         Finishing off full rock collection of IL (west side of Physical Sci)

            H.        CHM

                        1.         Searching for new Biochemist

                        2.         New NMR in but not quite running

                        3.         Have had about 6 outside speakers this semester

                        4.         November 2nd poster session, free pizza at 5PM third floor Phy Sci

                        5.         Two new faculty are doing great

            I.          CDS

                        1.         Held group advisement meeting

                        2.         Heard study abroad speaker (will not increase number of semsters)

                        3.         Bi-lingual speaker being brought in

                        4.         Sold “CDS” clothing for a fundraiser

                        5.         Scholastic book orders for fundraiser

                        6.         Raised $200 dollars for Hurricane Katrina victims

                        7.         Sending former student a care package well he is in Iraq

                        8.         Halloweenie Roast in Thrusday 6-8 at Morton Park

                        9.         November 3rd speaker on “While Following my Dreams, I had a Nightmare.” second floof in Health building

                        10.       November 11th at 5:15 PM Grad School preparation course

            J.          SOC-ANT

                        1.         Finally stages of establishing 4th scholarship

                        2.         Blair Hall construction coming along (get to move-in in March)

Thoughts on Mission Statement

            1.)        What elements of the EIU educational experience are distinctive?

            Open door policy, Taught by professor (not TA's), Smaller class size, Research opportunties, Level of education of the faculty, Flexible scheduling, Department RSO's

            2.)        What are the elements of the EIU educational experience or which we are most proud?

            Professor's backgrounds, Diverse faculty, Approachable faculty, Being a teaching centered university, low cost, stable faculty

            3.)        For what are we known by our prospective and current students?  For what would we like to be known?

            Friendly atmosphere, Student support through scholarships, jobs and internships, Large ratio of students going on to graduate school, Want to be a First-choice university

            4.)        For what are known by our alums?  For what would we like to be known?

            Have a party school past, having a safe campus, increasing student's confidence, good preparation for the next step, helping with job placements, having an edge in obtaining a job, turning average students into great students

            5.)        For what are we known by the general citizenry?  For what would we like to known?

            Education department is top notch, Community outreach activities, Research presence, Student orientated

            6.)        What are five key elements that should/ must be in our statement of Institutional Mission?

            Student focused, Diverse campus, Amazing leadership opportunities, High quality and preparation education, Accessible and affordable
