Meeting Minutes

COS Conference Room – Old Main – EIU

November 17, 2003

5:00 p.m.

 

Present:  Derrick Albert (PHY), Brian Bellott (CHM), Ashley Fritschle(MAT), Bridget Hellwig (Student Dean), Kaitlin McCormick (GEG), Darby Miller (PSY), Sean Moulton (ECN), Katherine Spoo (BIO), Amanda Webb (CDS), Dr. Mary Anne Hanner (Dean), Dr. Godson Obia (Associate Dean)

 

Not Present:   Bridget Nichols (SOC/ANT)

 

Student Dean Bridget Hellwig called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.

 

Department Reports

G-G:    Tutoring is available from 8-9 p.m. on Monday and Thursday.  Many internships and study abroad programs are available within the department.  The clubs are designing a T-shirt.

BIO:     Tri Beta is working on the Honors Banquet.  Zoology Club will be having a candy sale.  ADE is trying to set up a Health Fair.  The Botany Club will be selling plants in the spring.  Attendance is an issue for all the clubs.

PHY:    No Report

PSY:    Psi Chi is getting a Relay For Life Team together.  There was an informational for the new inductees in Psi Chi.  They will be holding a faculty/student volleyball game, and the end of the year banquet will be at Krackers.  They are also going to try to hold a semi-formal dance open to all students.

ECN:   The glasses fundraiser went very well.  The toy drive was very successful, and they gave the toys to two charities and the hospital.  They are planning their annual March trip to Chicago.

CDS:    ISHA is having their annual conference the 19th-22nd.  They are implementing and training people to use the new system to rate their clients.

MAT:   Math Club/KME will have a meeting February 4.  They are planning a meeting with a State Farm actuary on or around February 11.  The annual ICTM Math Contest will be held on February 28 in Coleman Hall.  Math tutoring is available free to all students in Old Main on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9-3 and Tuesday and Thursday from 9-1.  It is also available in Taylor on Monday from 8-10 and Carman and Stevenson on Tuesday and Thursday from 8-10.

CHM:  The Chemistry department is in the process of interviewing new faculty candidates.  ACS has three demos set up for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  They will be having a bake sale, a euchre tournament, and a spring picnic with the faculty.

           

Spring Semester Activities

        February 16 is COS night at the EIU basketball game.  During half time, there will be pizza to enjoy.  Significant others are welcome, but it is not open to the public, so please no friends.

        The Science Fest will be held on March 26 from 1:30-4:30.  Members of the COS Student Advisory Board will be recognized.

        We will also be choosing the winner of the Outstanding Teaching Award.  Each department should have at least one nominee by the next meeting.  Dr. Hanner will be emailing everyone will the specifics, including a nomination form.  (NOTE:  The nominations are not due until the March 22 meeting.)

        The COS Student Advisory Board will be hosting an International Forum on April 15 and selecting a topic of discussion at the next meeting.  Dr. Obia suggested a panel or lecture on the topic of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the cultural and economic impact on third world countries.

 

Student Concerns

Discussion continued concerning student evaluations.  Students were advised that they are not required to complete the demographic and expected grade information on the course evaluation if they believe that it will reveal their identity.  In addition, students can can type their concerns and give them to the secretary anonymously.

           

In her report, Dean Hanner presented information on the Academic Affairs FY06 Goals, as well as the College of Science FY06 Goals.  She distributed copies of the COS objectives.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 5:46 p.m.  The next meeting is at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2004.
