Old Business
The Outstanding Faculty Awards (OFA) were discussed. Ms. Thomas is organizing
the nominations in PLS. Ms. Boyd established a student committee out of
the Economics Club that will take input from other students and then make
a nomination. The Economics Club will also purchase a perpetual plaque
to be placed in the ECN Department for OFA nominees. They will also purchase
a small plaque for the ECN nominee. Mr. Miller reported that the Society
of Physics is organizing the PHY nomination.
The COS Student Advisory Board's participation in ScienceFest was discussed.
Dean Owens will be asking for volunteers at the next Advisory Board meeting
to assist at the March 1 ScienceFest events.
New Business
No reports from Student Senate were available. However, Dean Owen did
report that five off-campus Student Senate seats are currently vacant
and encouraged COS Advisory Board members and COS students to consider
applying for the seats.
Department Reports
Economics: The Economics Club made donations to Catholic Charities that
assisted needy children with their Christmas shopping as well as providing
those children with gifts. ECN students and faculty will be attending
the Midwest Economics Association meeting in Tennessee February 28-March
1. The Economics Club also purchased a bulletin board that has been installed
in Coleman Hall. Current events of economic interest are posted there.
Physics: EIU will be hosting the Illinois Chapter of the American Association
of Physics Teachers on April 5-6. Presentation of student research projects
will be part of the program.
Political Science: PLS students will be participating in Model Government
simulations at the end of February. PLS is sponsoring a lecture on 1/31/02.
The speaker is an expert on First Ladies of the US.
Dean's Report
Dr. Hanner reported on the impact of the Governor's rescission on the
College of Sciences and Academic Affairs at EIU.
Dr. Obia gave a preliminary report on the Science Fair that COS will be
assisting with on April 13. Students will be invited to assist with the
Science Fair that is being organized by Ms. Chelsea New-Freeland, a student
at Jefferson Middle School in Charleston.
The next COS Student Advisory Meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Monday,
February 25, 2002 in the COS Conference Room.
