Economics

Welcome to the Department of Economics!

The Department of Economics offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree. In addition, the Department offers an International Studies option for interested undergraduate economics majors allowing them to focus on international economics, business, political science, geography/geology, and history courses.

The Department’s mission is to encourage its students to become responsible citizens who are well prepared to achieve their own personal, educational, and professional goals.

Marketable Skills Mean Career Choices

An education in economics will give you practical skills and many career choices. These include analytical and critical thinking skills, quantitative skills, the ability to communicate well (both orally and in written work), and computing skills. These are skills that are desired and rewarded by employers.

Students may also want to consider the flexibility of an academic degree when choosing a major. In the past, individuals could expect to remain in the same career throughout their lifetimes. This is no longer the case. Today’s graduates need versatile skills in order to adapt to a changing environment.

An economics degree is useful in many careers. In the financial services sector, brokers and analysts interpret economic data on a daily basis. Business managers contend with changing market conditions, make investment decisions, and evaluate risks. Even schools of law emphasize economic considerations because the legal system plays a vital role in shaping incentives.
