Student Awards and Scholarships

The College of Sciences has several awards and scholarships that are awarded to students. Due dates and applications can be found on the Applications and Forms page.

Student Scholarships

Gerardo J. Solis Scholarship
To be eligible, student must be of Latino/Latina heritage, a full time student majoring in a degree program within the College of Sciences, have completed a minimum of 48 semester hours of course work at EIU, and have a grade point average in good standing. Scholarship will be awarded the following fall. To be eligible, student must continue enrollment at EIU as an undergraduate.
Myerscough and Pfeffinger Scholarship
The Brian and Trina Myerscough – Chad Pfeffinger Outstanding Sigma Pi Service Award is awarded to a current member in good standing of the fraternity of Sigma Pi. Scholarship applications are available in the Dean’s Office, College of Sciences, 2118 Old Main, or in the Dean’s Office, College of Education and Professional Studies, 1420 Buzzard Hall.
Eunice W. Dougherty Scholarship
To be eligible, student must have between 60 and 89 semester hours, a cumulative grade point average of 3.85 or higher is needed, based on all undergraduate course work, with at lease 15 graded semester hours at EIU. Scholarship will be awarded the following fall, to be eligible, student must continue enrollment at EIU as an undergraduate.
Lewis T. White Memorial Scholarship
To be eligible, student must be an academically talented student who graduated from Charleston High School. The recipient(s) must be enrolled full-time Fall and Spring Semesters at Eastern Illinois University . The recipient(s) must be a declared major in the field of Mathematics or Science. Financial need is not a consideration. The recipient(s) may be eligible to apply for, and receive, the award again provided she/he continues to meet the criteria. The award shall be selected in the spring and payable one-half the following Fall Semester and one-half the following Spring Semester.
Patricia Stal Markowski Science Scholarship
To be eligible, student must be a full-time undergraduate student at EIU with a declared major in Chemistry, Nursing, Physics or Biological Sciences in good academic standing, and/or have a 2.5 GPA or higher. Scholarship will be awarded the following fall; to be eligible, a student must continue enrollment at EIU as an undergraduate. Recipient may be eligible to apply for, and receive, the award again (maximum of twice) if she/he continues to meet the criteria. Note: This award will not be available until Spring 2010.

Student Awards

Scholars in Undergraduate Research at Eastern Award (SURE)
The SURE program fosters undergraduate research participation in COS. Undergraduate involvement in research with mentoring professors is a rewarding experience for students. The goal of the SURE program is to facilitate research activities through an incentive program for students.The SURE awards are awarded to undergraduate students in their junior or senior years. Students are encouraged to present their research in a professional setting (a local or state conference, student association/club meeting or classes). See some past recipients here.
Graduate Student Investigator Award
The Graduate Student Investigator Award (GSI) program was developed by the Dean of the College of Sciences to support graduate research and to provide a forum for the presentation of superior graduate student research. See some past recipients here.
Social Science Writing Award
The Departments of Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology-Anthropology of Eastern Illinois University invite students to participate in the Annual Social Science Writing Awards competition. Regardless of major, undergraduate students who write research papers as a regular assignment in all social science courses may submit them for recognition and one of the cash awards.
