COS Faculty Awards Information
The Alan and Carlene Baharlou Distinguished Service Award is designed to recognize a member in the College of Sciences who has developed a record of outstanding service that supports and contributes to the teaching and research missions of the College. The award shall be made during spring semester each academic year. The ideal candidate for the Baharlou Distinguished Service Award shall be a faculty member or department chair that must meet three criteria.

The Lida G. Wall Faculty Research Mentor Award is an annual honor bestowed on a faculty member in the College of Sciences who has served as a research mentor to one or more undergraduate students during the last two years. The award shall be made in the spring semester of each year at the College of Sciences' annual ScienceFest.

The College of Sciences Teaching Excellence Award is designed to celebrate and honor consistent excellence in teaching. The Award shall be made in the spring semester of each academic year. Candidates for the COS Teaching Excellence Award shall be College of Sciences full-time faculty members.

The Ringenberg Award is the highest honor bestowed by Eastern Illinois University's College of Sciences. The award is named in honor of Lawrence A. Ringenberg, the first dean of Arts and Sciences at EIU serving from 1961-1980. In the tradition of Dr. Ringenberg, this award recognizes excellence in our academic community. The award is given to tenured faculty members in the College of Sciences for exceptional performance during their academic career at Eastern Illinois University. The award shall be made in the spring semester of each academic year.

COS Faculty Grants

The Visiting Scholars Award is available to assist departments or organizations with the expenses associated with bringing visiting scholars to campus or with the expenses associated with having professional/scientific meetings or conferences at EIU. These awards are competitive.

The amount of the award may be less than requested in order to accommodate as many of the high quality requests as possible. The COS Visiting Scholars Award applications will be on the COS Website on or before September 1. Applications are due to Department on Friday, October 3, 2008 and are due in the College of Sciences office on Monday, October 6, 2008.

The Early Research Support Grant fund is available to untenured, tenure-track faculty to promote scholarly activities and to provide support as they begin their research program at EIU.  The intent of the fund is to provide supplementary materials and equipment to enhance faculty members' research/creative activities or to provide funds to assist faculty members with expenses associated with presenting research/creative activity results at a professional conference.

Ten to twelve grants are available each academic year. The average amount of each grant is $500.00. Faculty members apply annually for funds throughout their probationary years.

The COS Early Research Support Grant applications will be available on the COS website on or before September 1 and are due to Department Chairs on Wednesday, November 5, 2008. The applications are due in the College of Sciences office on Friday, November 7, 2008. Recipients will be announced on or before December 5, 2008.

College of Sciences Seed Grants provide incentive funds for faculty to obtain pilot data in order to seek external grant funds. Since the Seed Grant program is competitive, each grant is limited to $1,000.  The grant competition is open to tenured and tenure-track faculty in Unit A.

The Seed Grant applications are due to department chairs on Wednesday, January 14, 2009. The applications are due in the College of Sciences office Friday, January 16, 2009. Faculty may not reapply for a Seed Grant until COS receives documentation of submission of application to an external agency from the previous Seed Grant.

This form should be used by faculty who seek grants from the Eastern Illinois University Foundation to provide assistance in funding their research or instructional activity for the improvement of undergraduate instruction. Awards are limited to a maximum of $1500

Application forms are to be submitted to your Department Chair by Monday April 2, 2007.

The purpose of the Study Abroad Initiative (SAI) is to provide planning or incentive funds for faculty to develop new and innovative international study experiences for students. Experiences would include: developing short-term or long-term study abroad courses, expanding existing study abroad courses, and establishing international undergraduate research opportunities.

The total SAI allocation is $5,000. Three to five awards shall be made, and the amount of each award will depend upon the number of awards given and the quality of each proposal. Fiscal year 2007 award funds must be expended by June 30, 2008.

Submit the ranked proposals to the Office of the Dean, College of Sciences, by January 11, 2008.
