Malinda A. Sawyer, a thirty year veteran elementary teacher from the Mattoon School District, is a member of the student teaching faculty at Eastern Illinois University. She earned two education degrees from EIU with a particular focus in strategic reading instruction, vocabulary acquisition, and fluency. Her educational experience includes teaching second and third grades at both Humboldt and Arland D. Williams, Jr. elementary schools and Mrs. Sawyer relies on this classroom teaching experience as she helps to guide and nurture Pre-K through 12 student teachers into the real world of public and private education.
In addition to her EIU duties, Mrs. Sawyer continues to work as a reading consultant and screens students for entry into local gifted education programs. She is available for panel discussions or presentations on What to Expect During Student Teaching or Getting Off to a Good Start in Education. Married with two adult sons, Malinda has a global interest in women’s issues, a local interest in childhood literacy, and a personal interest in fitness.
