Media Theory and Production
The media theory and production position requires that an individual
teach in the areas of media theory and criticism and have the ability to teach
production on a regular basis. The faculty member is also expected to teach
in the departmental core (research methods, communication theory, argumentation
and critical thinking, applied communication). The normal teaching load
ranges between 18 and 24 semester hours per academic year. Research/creative
activities, academic advising, departmental committee assignments, and professionally
related service are expected.
A faculty member in this position is expected to have or near completion of
a Ph.D. program, have an established research/publication record, significant
teaching experience with high student evaluations, and video production experience.
This mix of qualification is difficult to find. The department conducted
a search for this position in the Spring of 2002. There was a total of
seven candidates in the pool. The pool was narrowed to three candidates. One
of the three candidates withdrew from the search prior to interviews. Of
the two finalists, the one hired was the only one to met the qualifications
for the position.
