POSITION: Academic Advisor/Principal Counselor, Minority Affairs - TRiO Student Support Services

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in counseling, education, guidance and counseling, educational psychology, or in social work at the high school or postsecondary level, or in social service programs, preferably with low-income, disadvantaged or disabled students. Experience in programming student activities. Knowledge and experience in evaluation or testing.

Position Description: This is a 12 month full-time academic professional position. The position reports to the Director of TRiO. The Principal Counselor is the lead counselor and is responsible for the provision of general counseling services to all students. The position is also responsible for tutoring, study skills instruction and organizing cultural events.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide on-going academic, personal, career and financial aid counseling and guidance to student caseload.
  2. Prepare Individual Student Plans (ISP) for student caseload and monitor progress
  3. Prepare recommendations to the director on students to be admitted to the Program.
  4. Supervise the maintenance of student files and insure that eligibility records are accurate and accessible to all staff.
  5. Coordinate and supervise tutors and administer the Tutoring Program.
  6. Interview, hire, train and supervise the tutors.
  7. Prepare the Tutor Handbook.
  8. Prepare the tutoring impact report.
  9. Prepare semester and annual counseling reports.
  10. Serve as a liaison with the Office of Financial Aid
  11. Prepare an annual student profile based on student assessment.
  12. Assist with recruitment, orientation and retention
  13. Assist with the selection of students to attend the student leadership conferences.
  14. Review mid-term grades to ensure students are performing as expected.
  15. Assist students in preparing for and gaining admittance into a graduate school.
  16. Provide graduate and professional school seminars on graduate admissions examinations.
  17. Assist students in locating scholarship, internships, research and summer employment.
  18. Prepare and present interpersonal skills workshops.
  19. Be familiar with and able to complete financial aid and graduate admission applications.
  20. Attend and supervise some evening, Saturday and overnight events.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

Starting Date: July 7, 2008
