Illinois Certification Testing System

Pre-registration is Required.
Registration is completed by mail or over the internet through National Evaluation Systems. Registration materials may be picked up in the Dean’s Office, College of Education & Professional Studies or at your local Regional Office of Education or viewed over the internet at www.icts.nesinc.com . Tests are offered at numerous sites across the State.

Below is a listing from the ICTS website (as of May 10, 2004) with upcoming testing dates for 2004-2005. Please visit the official Illinois Certification Testing System Website for registration information at:
www.icts.nesinc.com

Information about Required Tests

Basic Skills Test
Must be passed for admission to teacher education. For students admitted under the old selection process, they must pass the Basic Skills Test prior to beginning Student Teaching. No student can begin student teaching without passing the Basic Skills test.

Content Area/Subject Matter Knowledge Test
Beginning Fall 2004, no student in the State of Illinois can begin student teaching without first passing the content area/subject matter knowledge test. The Revised Content Area/Subject Matter Knowledge Tests will be introduced in July 2004.

Assessment of Professional Teaching
Passage of the appropriate version of this test is required of all candidates in order to receive a teaching certificate.

Middle Grades Endorsements

Unless you have a K-12 Certificate, you must have a Middle Grades Endorsement on either your Elementary or Secondary Certificate in order to teach grades 6-8. To become eligible for this endorsement you must complete the required number of hours in the specific content field(s) and complete courses focused on teaching in the middle grades. At EIU, the undergraduate courses are:

MLE 3110
MLE 4280
MLE 4760

If you do not wish to take these courses immediately you may wait and add the endorsement by taking specific courses (either through EIU or another institution) at a later time. Post-baccalaureate teacher certification candidates or graduate students seeking to add the endorsement can choose to take MLE 5110 and MLE 5150 instead.
