FALL 2009 SUPPORT GRANTS RECIPIENTS Faculty Development and the Faculty Development Advisory Committee are pleased to announce the Fall 2009 recipients of the Faculty Development Support Grants. Congratulations to the recipients: Betty Smith (geology/geography), Suzie Park (English), William Slough (mathematics and computer sciences), Steve Daniel (biological sciences), Jon Oliver (kinesiology and sports studies), Anna Cromwell (music), Kathleen O’Rourke (family and consumer sciences) and Jinhee Lee (history).

CHARLES EBERLY Charles Eberly, professor of counseling and student development, has been selected to receive the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Region IV-East Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs through Teaching Award. The award will be presented to him during the NASPA IV-East Dinner and Awards Program on Nov. 8 in Lombard, Ill.
FY2010 COUNCIL ON FACULTY RESEARCH AWARDS ANNOUNCED The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the Council on Faculty Research would like to congratulate the faculty members who have received 2009-2010 Council on Faculty Research Awards. The council received 31 grant proposals. The College of Arts and Humanities submitted six proposals, and one was funded; the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences submitted two proposals; and the College of Sciences submitted 23 proposals, with 11 funded.
Faculty members receiving awards are: Eric Bollinger, biological sciences; Craig Chesner, geology/geography; W. Timothy Coombs (joint proposal), communication studies; Sherry Holladay (joint proposal), communication studies; Kai Hung, biological sciences; Christopher Laingen, geology/geography; Zhiwei Liu, biological sciences; Kip McGilliard, biological sciences; Scott Meiners, biological sciences; Andrew Methven, biological sciences; Stephen Mullin, biological sciences; Britto Nathan, biological sciences; and Kraig Wheeler, chemistry.

DAGNI BREDESEN Dagni Bredesen, associate professor/English, presented a paper, "Marketing the Female Detective in Victorian Popular Print," at a conference, Victorian Markets and Marketing, in Vancouver, British Columbia (Oct. 15-17, 2009). This conference was jointly sponsored by the Victorian Studies Association of Western Canada and the Victorian Interdisciplinary Studies Association of the Western United States.
TIMOTHY COOMBS and SHERRY HOLLADAY Professors Timothy Coombs and Sherry Holladay from communication studies were the keynote speakers at Communicare 2009. Communicare is a major public relations conference organized by Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall, Sweden. Their topic was “Public Relations as Managing Influence.”
TIMOTHY COOMBS and SHERRY HOLLADAY Professors Timothy Coombs and Sherry Holladay from communication studies participated in a research seminar at Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall, Sweden, this May. Their topic was “Relationships Between Corporate Social Responsibility, Activists and Public Relation.”
2010 SUMMER RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY GRANT COMPETITION Proposals for the 2010 Summer Research and Creative Activity Grant competition are due in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, 1102 Blair Hall, by noon Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010. All tenured/tenure-track faculty in Bargaining Unit A are eligible to apply. LINDA MARRS-MORFORD Linda Marrs-Morford, educational leadership, recently received an award in recognition of outstanding service to the schools of the state of Illinois from the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools, Area IV.
BOBBI KINGERY and MICHAEL SHIRLEY Bobbi Kingery (Career Services) and Michael Shirley (history) led a panel discussion -- "Let’s Work Together: Enabling Student Success in Both Career and Life" -- at the annual school superintendents' conference in Springfield on Oct. 27. Some 30 district and regional superintendents took part.
DEN WINS SECOND STRAIGHT PACEMAKER For the second consecutive year, dennews.com, the online version of The Daily Eastern News, has won a national Pacemaker award, the top honor given by the Associated Collegiate Press. The 2009 winners were announced Oct. 31 at the National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas.
The other four-year daily newspaper Pacemakers were won by iowastatedaily.com, Iowa State University; Kansan.com, University of Kansas; KentNewsNet.com, Kent State University; and OUDaily.com, University of Oklahoma.
According to an ACP press release, the contest was judged by Ellyn Angelotti, interactivity editor for the Poynter Institute, a leader in online journalism training and education. Angelotti noted that the top sites displayed excellence in the following areas: integration of multimedia and user-generated content; navigability; breadth of coverage, including in-depth reporting; custom, clean design; and sound news judgment on the home page.
Nicole Weskerna was the spring editor of dennews.com. Faculty advisers were journalism faculty members Lola Burnham and Bryan Murley.

ROBERT WISEMAN Robert C. Wiseman (Booth Library) attended the AECT convention in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 28-31, where he presented a paper and session on "Digital Photography for Classroom and Publication." The paper and session involved the editing of digital images through the use of PhotoShop. Also, he was the facilitator for three sessions.
CANDRA CHAHYADI Candra Chahyadi's paper titled, "Not Paying Dividends? A Decomposition Of The Decline In Dividend Payers," written with Jesus M. Salas, was named the first runner-up for the 2010 McGraw-Hill/Irwin Distinguished Paper at the 2010 Southwestern Society of Economists in Dallas, Texas. Chahyadi is an assistant professor of finance in the School of Business.
