In accordance with the 2012-2016 EIU-UPI Unit A agreement, Summer Research and Creative Activity Awards will once again be available this year. The awards are for research and creative activity projects conducted between the end of the spring semester and Aug. 31, 2013, by tenured/tenure track faculty in Bargaining Unit A. Approximately 20 awards of $4,500 each in the form of personal services payments will be granted. Faculty who wish to apply for funding should hand-deliver one copy of their proposal to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, 1102 Blair Hall, no later than noon on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013. Researchers who have previously received a CFR grant and/or Summer Research and Creative Activity Award should make sure a progress/final report is on file for each award in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. FY2014 PROPOSAL INITIATIVE FUND
Proposals for grants from the Proposal Initiative Fund (PIF) are due by noon on May 8, 2013. The purpose of the PIF is to support projects with potential to lead to significant external funding. Eligible projects include -- but are not limited to -- research, creative activity, service, curriculum development, and outreach. All university personnel are welcome to apply for PIF grants. If you are working on an article, a book chapter, a grant report or any other writing project, you might be interested in the "write-on-site" group that meets in the Faculty Development Office every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. during the spring semester.
What does it mean to write-on-site? The term was coined by Kerry Ann Rockquemore (president and CEO of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity) and describes people coming together to work on their particular projects for two hours at least once a week. Although people are working on their own projects, writing together in one place can provide the accountability of showing up, cultivate the sense that we are part of a community of writers and help create that energy buzz that comes from being around others who are doing the same thing. Please join us. Bring your laptop to the Faculty Development Office (in Booth Library basement below the north entrance), check in, grab a cup of tea or coffee and start working. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP/CREATIVE ACTIVITY GRANTS
The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity (URSCA) Council is prepared to accept applications from undergraduates and their faculty mentors for research/creative activity grants for Summer 2013. The grants for Summer 2013 are each in the amount of $3,000 to the student, payable June 1, 2013, and $500 for the faculty mentor. The student applications and faculty forms are available on the Honors College website. Any EIU undergraduate student enrolled in the current semester with a minimum GPA of 3.0 may apply. The closing date for SU2013 applications is noon on Friday, Feb. 1. Recipients of these grants will be notified by late February or early March. Jan. 20: Professor Jonathon Brown -- “Issues in Contemporary Islam in North America.” As the Muslim population in North America increases and as Muslims have an increasingly prominent role in American life, including in many small rural communities throughout the Midwest, many misconceptions have arisen about Muslims, their beliefs and their practices. Among the topics this program will explore is the Islamic concept of “shariah,” the religious principles which govern the lives of faithful Muslims.
Jan. 27: Professor Michael Budde -- “Issues in Contemporary Catholicism in North America.” Roman Catholicism is, by far, the largest of the Christian denominations in North America, claiming about 25 percent of the population. This program will look at a variety of issues as Catholics engage the broader American society in the political arena, such as the simultaneous resistance to Obamacare by the bishops and support for the reforms by a coalition of nuns referred to as “Nuns on the Bus." This is related to issues of leadership in the church: who speaks for the church; who has a say in formulating church positions on contemporary issues; and the obligation of lay Catholics to support political positions taken by the church hierarchy.

Marko Grünhagen, Lumpkin Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship in the School of Business, received the 2013 Associate Editor of the Year Award by the Journal of Small Business Management. Grünhagen has served on JSBM’s editorial board for the past 10 years with responsibility for manuscript submissions in the areas of small business marketing and franchising. The award is based on accomplishments related to the editorial responsibilities of managing manuscript submissions and the related review process, as well as contributions to editorial policy decisions. The Journal of Small Business Management is the oldest leading journal in entrepreneurship and small business management globally.
Stephen Mullin (biological sciences) has been appointed as the incoming editor-in-chief of the scientific journal, "Herpetologica." First published in 1936, this quarterly journal publishes original papers that quantitatively test hypotheses, address theoretical issues and analyze the diversity, systematics and evolution of amphibians and reptiles. The journal is published by the Herpetologists' League, North America's oldest professional society for scientists interested in amphibians and reptiles.
Bill Elliott, Graduate School, has been nominated to serve a three-year term on the Mattoon Area Community Foundation Advisory Board.
The Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation was established in 1999 as a result of a partnership between the Mattoon Area Community Foundation (est. 1990) and the Effingham County Community Foundation (est. 1999). Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation operates as a collection of permanent and non-permanent funds for the long-term benefit of Clark, Clay, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Effingham, Fayette, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland and Shelby counties.
